Complete a review

Once an Author has created questions, test sections and tests, the next step is for them to be reviewed. This will be triggered by the Author changing the workflow state of the item to Pending Approval.

It’s important that Authoring Managers complete a quality check on all items. They have the same access to features as Authors do, but in addition, they have access to approve or reject tests, test sections or questions.

Review questions

Common things to check when reviewing questions:

  • The question is clear, concise and suitably worded
  • The question will achieve what it is meant to achieve
  • The answer options make sense and are at the right level of difficulty
  • The scoring method and weighting associated with each question
  • The marking criteria for manually marked questions is clearly defined
  • The correct resources, stimuli and reference materials are included

When reviewing questions, Authoring Managers can:

  • Send the question back to the Author for modification
  • Approve the question for inclusion in a test
  • Make modifications to the question themselves

Search for and view a question

Questions are reviewed, edited and approved or rejected from the Questions list found by selecting Author in the Menu, then selecting Questions.


You can use the search filter to target certain questions by selecting the Search in Question Name, Identifier or Text expandable search section.

To target the questions pending your review, select the State drop-down, then select Pending Approval. Select the Search button to complete the search.

Open the questions by selecting the question name.

Complete your review

Once you have opened the question, you will be able to see the question details, including what is expected of the candidate, any included resources etc.

There are various sections of interest that you can review.

The examples below demonstrate what you can see for a multiple choice question. The format may be different for other question types.

Question stem

This is the main section where candidates are provided with instructions and/or asked a question.

Response

The answer options appear in this expandable section. The correct response should be selected. Another useful item to check is the scoring type. For more information on scoring, see the Scoring questions section.

Audio

This expandable section will display any audio that may have been attached to the question.

You can listen to it by selecting the Play button, or change the audio by select the Edit icon.

Stimuli

This expandable section will display any stimuli (a resource or a collection of resources) or reference material that has been added to the question. You can view each stimulus by selecting the Preview icons. You can edit the existing stimuli or add new ones by selecting the Edit icon.

Comments

This expandable section allows you to communicate with the question Authors.

Marking

This expandable section will only be available if the question type is one that needs to be manually marked. It displays any marking rubric or marking scheme components which have been created for the question. You can edit the marking items by selecting the Edit icon.

Change the question workflow

To approve a question or to send it back to the Author for modification, make a selection from the Workflow state using the Change drop-down button.

Review test sections

Common things to check when reviewing test sections:

  • The sections have been set up using a clear theme eg. introduction
  • The sections contain the right questions and amount of questions

When reviewing test sections, Authoring Managers can:

  • Send the test section back to the Author for modification
  • Approve the test section for inclusion in a test
  • Make modifications to the test section themselves

Search for and view a question

Test sections are reviewed, edited and approved or rejected from the Test Sections list found by selecting Author in the Menu, then selecting Test Sections.

You can use the search filter to target certain questions by selecting the Search for Test Sections expandable search section.

To target the test sections pending your review, select the State drop-down, then select Pending Approval. Select the Search button to complete the search.

Open the test section by selecting the test section name.

Complete your review

Once you have opened the test section, you will be able to see the test section details. There are various sections of interest that you can review.

Questions

This expandable section allows you to see all the questions contained within the test section, their weight and randomisation and optional question settings. To preview the entire test section, select the Preview link.

To edit which questions are in the test section, change the order of questions, change the weighting or randomisation and optional question options, select the Edit icon next to the Questions expandable section.

To edit specific questions within the test section, select the Edit icon next to the question. You can also preview individual questions by select the Preview icon next to the question.

Reference material

This expandable section will display any reference material included in the test section. You can view the reference material by selecting the Preview icon, or edit the reference material by selecting the Edit icon.

Stationery tools

This expandable section will display which stationery tools are available to the candidates taking the test. To edit these, select the Edit icon.

Change the test section workflow

To approve a test section or to send it back to the Author for modification, make a selection from the Workflow state using the Change drop-down button.

Review tests

Common things to check when reviewing tests:

  • The test has been set up clearly and in a logical order
  • The test will achieve what it is meant to achieve
  • The resit settings for the test
  • The timing options for the test

When reviewing a test, Authoring Managers can:

  • Send the test back to the Author for modification
  • Approve the test section for inclusion in a test

Search for and view a test

Tests are reviewed, edited and approved or rejected from the Test list found by selecting Author in the Menu, then selecting Tests and Surveys.

You can use the search filter to target certain questions by selecting the Search for Tests and Surveys expandable search section.

To target the test pending your review, select the State drop-down, then select Pending Approval. Select the Search button to complete the search.

Open the test by selecting the test name.

Complete your review

Once you have opened the test, you will be able to see the test details. There are various sections of interest that you can review.

Resit settings

This expandable section will display the resit settings including how many attempts candidates are allowed and what type of feedback they will receive. To edit the resit settings, select the Edit icon.

Timing options

This expandable section will display how long the candidates have to complete the test. To edit the timing options, select the Edit icon.

Sections

This expandable section will display the sections included in the test. You can see what order the sections appear in, how many questions are in each and what workflow state they are in.

To preview a test section, select the Preview icon. To edit the test sections, select the Edit icon. You can also add additional test sections by selecting the + icon.

Change the test section workflow
